I’ve always loved history, and gained a Medieval and Modern History degree at the University of Hull. Sketching and drawing had always been a hobby of mine, and earlier this year I decided to combine the two and sketch historical buildings. I have settled on a style that I think captures some of the history and character of the building I’m sketching. I’m also a member of the Urban Sketchers community and enjoy working out on location.

I start with a rough pencil sketch, and then add in the structure of the piece using a permanent fine liner pen. I then add watercolour, sometimes bringing out stronger, contrasting colours and add tone, shading and definition using brush pens. I find that adding splashes of colour and slight distortions create energy and character in the scene.
