Karen Tomalin – Art quilting
Hi I am Karen Tomalin
Art quilting and machine stitching is a recent passion of mine.
I have been exhibiting locally for the past 5 years.
My style is free form piecing, an intuitive organic approach to quilting.
Quilting is a learning journey, balancing composition, observation, staying curious , risk and discovery.
My inspiration comes from my love of nature, the flora and fauna in the landscape.
Shape and colour surrounds us, whether it is the bold lines within the landscape, the structure of buildings; or the detailed patterns found within nature in rocks or tree bark.
The joy of the over looked.
My pictures are made by hand cut fabric shapes machine stitched into place. I make applique fabric animal pictures are of the creatures I love.
The recent landscape pictures, and flowers are strips of fabric and thread, different textures, which are heavily stitched between a water soluble interfacing. Reworked until the threads merge.
The stitching detail or definition is by free motion sewing,
Similar to sketching or drawing.
